The 2023 Laureus World Sports Awards in Paris was a reminder of the magic of the greatest show in sports as the world’s greatest athletes made memories that will last forever.
The return of the Laureus World Sports Awards to its star-studded, red-carpeted, bulb-flashing finery gave us a reminder – after two years away – of the moments that happen only at Laureus.
Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski engaged in conversation in front of disbelieving fans; Carlos Alcaraz, as nervous as a schoolboy about meeting Messi on the red carpet; Eileen Gu quoting Nelson Mandela during her acceptance speech.
Messi made yet more history: the greatest footballer in the world is now the only athlete to win both the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year and Team of the Year Awards in the same year. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is not only the five-time world champion over 100m, she is the 2023 Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year.
Gu’s freestyle skiing has made her a global sensation and now the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year. David Ginola presented Christian Eriksen with the Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award, after the Dane’s recovery from cardiac arrest suffered during a Euro 2020 match.
Catherine Debrunner started the year as a sprinter and finished it as a marathon champion and the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability. Alcaraz, the kid who would be king of men’s tennis, received the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award.
Lewandowski presented the Laureus Sport for Good Award to TeamUp, a global intervention that supports children who have been affected by war or conflict.
All of our winners were together in Paris, along with Laureus Academy Members and other influential figures from the world of sport.
